heading back to the white house as reaction pours in following his state of the union address. nbc's brian williams will join us in a few minutes with a live report. >> the body of christopher dorner, recovered from inside a burned out cabin in the mountains east of l.a. and with it the end of a wild and dangerous manhunt for an ex-cop. anything but a quiet ending. gunfire. flames, and another law enforcement officer killed. >> we have team coverage of all developments today. first, to the news 4 live desk. >> minutes ago a source inside the mayor's office in l.a. told nbc news police do believe the body found in that burned out cabin is indeed christopher dorner. this news after a dramatic and deadly day in this manhunt. here is how law enforcement says this all went down. s.w.a.t. teams shot out the windows to the cabin. then fired tear gas inside. brought in a special piece of

heavy equipment to begin tearing down the walls one by one. no one escaped from that cabin, after the fire began. and again, christopher dorner was believed to be, what is believed christopher dorner's body, pretty sure, was found inside. the final hours of this nearly week-long saga began this afternoon when two san bernardino county sheriff's deputies tracked dorner to the cabin. in a shootout they fired 500 round of ammunition. and the two deputies were hit, one of them was killed. a reporter arrived on the scene as the gunfire was unleashed you. can hear it during this live report that he was making on the air, as he got trapped in the midst of it all. >> dorner is suspected of killing four people since

yourself from the background of the case. >> you have to. you have to. you cannot take it personal. even though it is one of your own that has gone bad. you have to focus on the mission. everyone else has to back each other up. >> this happened so quickly. they didn't wait. they didn't hold back. they didn't -- sort of -- give him time to do much of anything it doesn't seem as if he was in that cabin. >> we may learn after the fact. but i am sure they had different levels of contingencies ready to go. and they wanted to, to decide to when it was best to their advantage to make annen tr entr. they need to come home as well safe. >> home safe they will be tonight. clark also says the weather in those mountains was potential factor. temperatures are well below freezing tonight. that its conducive to s.w.a.t. officers who needed to stay sharp to bring the terror to a conclusion. >> to the state of the union address.

president obama hit hot button issues, talked about gridlock in washington, war in afghanistan, immigration and gun control. the economy dominated his speech. he laid out an jeagenda. and he called for making smart spending cuts and reducing the deficit by closing tax loopholes. >> to hit the rest of our deficit reduction target we should do what leaders suggested and save hundred of billions of dollars by getting rid of tax loopholes and for the welloff and well connected. >> the most emotional part of the speech involved gun violence. the president talked about the newtown connecticut school shootings and called on congress to act on gun control. >> it has been two months since newtown. the families of newtown deserve a vote. the families of aurora, deserve a vote. the families of oak creek, and

tucson, and blacksburg, and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence they deserve a simple vote. >> we are joined by "nbc nightly news" anchor, brian williams, thank you for joining us, what is your take away from the president's speech and the response from marco rubio. >> we were reading what social media was saying. social media commenting on the fact that we kind of post speech commenters weren't focussing as much on the economy. but because the president chose to end on such an emotional note, on gun violence. that really came to define our kind of last and lasting memory of the speech. it was a quite a moment in the chamber. usually you don't see -- >> mr. speaker, the president of the united states. >> emotion like this in the

state of the union. almost unique. with all the lapel ribbons. with all of the victims, special guests in the chamber tonight. it certainly added -- extra weight to it. >> brian, all of our attention to night was really divided on twoer u eissues, east coast, we coast with the standoff in california. there is some concern about, how do we handle a situation like that. clearly, the state of the union has to take perrecedence in ter of coverage on a night like this? >> interesting, our sister station, knbc did not air the state of the union in stepped the speech on their local digital channel. they stayed because it was the biggest story, they stayed with live coverage. after all when the president got up to speak, we still had a burning cabin in the san bernardino mountains. and you kind of understand their

decision, locally. after all as you know, l.a. has been under lockdown. it's really been a reign of terror. 50 cop families with 'round-the-clock protection. we vowed not to get into a split screen situation. telling our viewers we would have the latest when the president was finished. talk about a backdrop of gun violence in the country and kind of the pall that hangs over us, post newtown and now this. two more victims today. the police deputy killed at his hand allegedly. and now the suspect himself. if the reports are correct, that, this is indeed over. and he is indeed dead. quite a night. >> we'll have a lot to talk about on both concerns in the days to come. brian, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. >> thank you. >> who is getting what and when? and how much? >> couldn't have said it better, jim. a smattering of snow here and

scary scene played out. we heard from the injured student's family who tells us he was taken to the hospital but is at recuperati recuperating. >> a crowded chapel at the university of maryland. >> we are here to mourn as a community. and the loss of our fellow members. >> students and faculty mourning the death of two student and a third injured in an early morning shooting near campus at this ridge home. police say, devon greene set fires in and outside the home to lure his roommates and attack them. >> it definitely raises awareness and like makes us want to be more safe the i still feel comfort bum. >> according to greene's family the grad student was mentally ill and on medication over a year. his roommate managed to call for help. greene turned the gun on himself, a bag with a baseball

will look at allegations from human rights watch. the group claimed 170 allegations of sexual assault were not documented over a three year period. police chief, kathy lanier, begs to differ. she was highly critical of the report. when it was released back in january. she said that in fact, more than 100 claims have been accounted for. she said the report does not reflect the current culture of the department. and that the research methods were flawed. >> next on news 4, a crane topples on to a church. why the operator's quick thinking is credited with saving lives. >> a pregnant woman went into labor at the height of the weekend blizzard. how the family got her to the hospital, despite three feet of snow piled on the roadway.

two people are recovering tonight after a crane collapsed on to a church in fairfax county. it happened as a crew was checking out a cell phone tower at saint like's in mt. vernon. the crane operator said the crane started to malfunction and just before it tipped over on its side, he was able to lower the basket on to the roof of the church to prevent the workers from falling to the ground. crews will be back out again tomorrow -- to remove that crane. >> scary moments for a man in woodbridge, virginia, who wok up to find himself under a truck

that slammed into his house. despite serious damage around him the guy wasn't badly hurt. the truck hit the house on willow lane, the driver was drinking and didn't have a valid license. the homeowner facing a big clean-up. >> police asking for help in an effort tonight to find a woman and her daughter from greenbelt who are both missing. 25-year-old stephanie hameric and her 1-year-old daughter were last seen walking toward a bus stop last thursday. her family says she has no means of supporting herself or her child. right now, police do not believe there is anything suspicious about their disappearance. but if you see the pair, you are asked to call, the prince george's county police. >> an amazing story from snow-covered connecticut tonight. a pregnant woman goes into labor. but her neighborhood is under 3 feet of snow from the blizzard. it took a little creativity. elbow grease to get her to the hospital. they made it. the adventure caught on a cell

are all clear right now. you don't have to go too far to the south to see the rain. the rain toward the carolinas. this isn't the rain that is going to make its way our way. this rain will go into the atlantic. storm that we are watching -- 'tis -- into tomorrow afternoon. and into the evening. today we saw breezy and warm conditions. today was really a spectacular afternoon. by tomorrow, we're going to see a completely different afternoon. 5:00 rush hour. look at the rain, the i-95 corridor. and southern maryland. i-81 back to the west. west virginia and maryland could pick up a pretty good amount of snow. couple of inches out there for ski resorts. for the rest of us it will be the time between 6:00, 7:00, 8:00. 10:00, 11:00. we do change to snow. even if an inch was to fall, the wet ground, because of the rain, not allow it to stick. most of it should melt on contact. but at least it may be pretty

for a couple hours to watch. then behind the system. gets pretty again. in a different way. this time with sunshine and mild temperatures. here's what to expect tomorrow. a nuisance storm. not much of anything. mostly rain. upward of a third of an inch. maybe a quarter inch. most locations to 1/2 inch. chance of snow. late evening. we will see a slow afternoon rush hour. rain or snow. right now, leaning toward rain around rush hour. and rain down to the south. to the north. west. maybe an inch, maybe a little bit more. charlestown. martinsburg. frederick, thurmond. and leesburg, herndon, less than an inch if anything at all. down toward the south not expecting anything more than flakes falling and melting as i mentioned once they make contact. cloudy, cool, dry during the day. temperatures, 30-36. this is your morning temperature. by tomorrow afternoon. we'll rise into the 40s. with the rain/snow likely. thursday, 49 degrees. 53 on our friday.

saturday, sunday, cold weather moves back in with a slight chance of snow saturday. saturday the day we are going to be watching out for much colder. few flurries. maybe a snowshower possible. but not expecting a big storm on saturday either. we dodge another one. the cold air will definitely been place for the weekend. won't last though. we move become to 50 during the day on tuesday. and that's our next chance of rain -- as well. and maybe write off our chances of snow for the rest of the winter. not quite yet. not quite ready to do that yet. >> getting there. getting close. >> getting close. >> thank you, doug. >> want to get back to the breaking news out of california. the situation with the ex-cop named christopher dorner, who has been shooting at police officer and threatened to shoot more. the los angeles police department wrapped up a news conference in which they contradicted some of the reports earlier from the mayor's office there. a police captain has just said that they have not located a body in the cabin that was burned down a few hours ago because they say it is too hot
